Recently Husband and I saw Children of Men. It’s a brilliant movie, both depressing as hell but with a glimmer of hope. For me, the grimness outweighed the glimmer. Toward the end of the movie during a scene of momentary calm saturated with hope and wonder, I lost control and broke down into loud sobs — uncontrollable boo-hoo sobs. Fortunately for my ego (embarrassed) the peace ended and loud gunfire broke out in the scene, so my sounds were drowned by that. If you are feeling emotionally fragile about the state of the world, or if you are contemplating parenthood (particularly motherhood), I would recommend you avoid seeing this movie. A friend of mine said the same of Pan’s Labyrinth, which she was was brilliant and imaginative but also tragic.
Now on that cheerful note, I ought to get started on unpacking boxes in the office. Have you seen either movie and if so, what impact did it have on you intellectually and/or emotionally?

I’ve seen neither film though I intend to see both.
(Clive. I’ve got it bad for Clive. And not because he’s hot. Although, damn, the man IS hot. No, no. It’s because he can act. Really damned act. Ever see “Closer”? Holy moly. He did stuff with his eyes in that movie that spoke more volumes than any of the lines he was given.)
I have, however, seen “Little Miss Sunshine” and it lifted my spirits. I walked into this wonderful, warm, quirky movie with no expectations and left genuinely happy.
If you want a boost, see it.
I saw Children of Men. I found it very moving and thought-provoking. It stays with you.
Welcome back to internet world!
My Honey and I just saw “Pan’s Labyrinth” this past Saturday. Very amazing and deeply distubring film. The cinematography is incredible. I’d highly recommend it – but only for those who can tolerate seeing a very dark film. We went to see it as a late show – I wish we had gone a little earlier so we could have gone home and watched something comedic afterwards…
