This is also my piece for Illustration Friday. This week’s theme is “Invention.” We invent masks to wear around different people: the hard worker at the job, the clever conversationalist at a party. Some of these masks are barely different from who we really are; they add a sheen to one’s self. Other masks completely cover one’s genuine self and present an elaborately different exterior.

I like masks. I once owned several leather masks, very fancy, I bought in New Orleans. While I was away once, my apartment was flooded by a water leak from above, and the masks were ruined.

Oh, lovely! Who doesn’t love masks! I did a whole book (now that I think of it, it was a collage book!) of images on masks and quotes on masks – what a mask is, etc. And then costumes (are masks costumes?) Great fun. Eye opener when you pull in the style magazines and what passes for “beauty.” You sure did get your paper mache smooth!
