Art Every Day Month – Day 5

art everyday month 06 - day 5 - a squirrely perspective

“A Squirrely Perspective” / 11 x 14″ Bristol vellum paper with oil pastel

I really wasn’t sure what to create today. I started with some boxes that I wanted to paint. I gessoed them, and since they had to dry I decided to draw. I could only find my small oil pastel set (12), which made this a challenge, but it was one I welcomed. I had no idea what to draw. I began with the ochre crayon and drew several horizontal lines. After staring at this for awhile with no inspiration, I turned the paper vertically and drew more lines. This became the trunk of a tree. My left brain turned off and I just let my hand do whatever it felt to do. In the end I saw that I had drawn as if I were high in a tree, and I thought of the squirrels I saw on the hike at Muir Woods and what a view they must have. I had a couple of hours of pure fun — I always do when I make stuff.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, I can see how this is reminiscent of Munch. The bare trees are like figures and the one closest is situated similarly to the screaming man in Munch’s painting.
