I believe this refers to the concept of the human soul, which is independent of the existence of the earth, but which, Yeats implies, does exist in a time line frame of reference and did have an existence before the earth…but, he wonders, what was the profile…what did it have then, to distinguish it’s individuality?

Yes, that’s the inquiry I believe he’s making, and that I have often wondered about. What and where were we all before is as intriguing a question as what happens after one dies, but it receives less attention.
