I struggle with this one, Kathryn. I believe mightily in giving people their due; I was raised on the Golden Rule. I keep writing gratitudes continuously. And yet, I have expectations sometimes that my family, my daughter and son-in-law whose son I’m raising right now, should express their appreciation more. And then I feel shame, great shame. I know they are grateful; they are just silent about it. As for me, I’m not very silent about my gratitudes, my thank yous–but maybe it’s more about do unto others as you would have them do unto you, than it is about being humble.

I struggle, too, Fran. When I saw this quote, it served as a reminder to me to vocalize my gratitude, even to myself, as a way of countering my gloominess of late. I also thought it might remind others of the importance to communicate their gratitude, just as long as I don’t lose focus on my own work. So easy to do, sometimes.
