A Question For You

The following question was used as an ice-breaker at the beginning of a meeting I recently attended. I liked it a lot, so I’m sharing.

If you were an inanimate object, what would you be and why? (Note: this question asks what you would be now, not what you’d like to be.)

Some answers shared at the meeting: a stone, a shoe. It could be anything!

My answer: water, specifically the ocean. Why? The ocean is a place of creativity and life (the origin of it in fact); it is turbulent; it has depths and mysteries yet to be fathomed; it is shape-shifting yet can also be as solid as the ground if fallen upon; it can be peaceful or destructive; it is beautiful; it is awe-inspiring; it is powerful.

So, tell me what you are! And don’t overthink the question. It’s meant to be fun.

The moon. I tried to rethink it, but I knew I didn’t want to be anything that could be manhandled or manipulated–read into that what you will! But the moon is always there though not always seen. It is always changing, yet consistent. Sometimes it is the graceful, elegant crescent, and sometimes the plain, unremarkable half, and sometimes stunningly full. It is never so bright you can’t look at it, but bright enough to cast light. It influences many cycles and yet remains aloof. It isn’t cuddly, but it is reassuring. Or not. And there is part of it that is never seen–of course, that bit about men landing on the moon and mucking it up with a flag is best not discussed. Excuse me, were they invited? šŸ˜‰

I guess I would be the wind – I could go wherever I wish — What an interesting mixer… I suspect I wouldn’t have wanted to answer it if I was part of a group of people I didn’t know…

    Oh, these are fun answers!

MojoMan, I’m curious: if you remove the question from the context of a meeting and imagine it being asked in a group of friends (such as this virutal one), what inanimate object are you now?

Endment, you would be the wind… is that what you’d say you are now? That was the challenge of the question for me — to keep in mind the real, not the possible, while summoning an image.

Thanks for participating. And I agree, this is a revealing question; I felt comfortable playing because this group of coworkers is close-knit.
