Cherry Mistmas!

My visitors arrived safely and are now tucked in for the night. The next five days or so will probably be very light on posting. So I shall leave you with a few goodies to enjoy.

First is an art piece; I followed a link from Grey Matter Gruel. The work is a piece about memories, seasons and using the elements of the textual representation of the memory to create an interactive one. Be sure to read the short paragraph describing the project; it can be downloaded for Windows or Mac.

I found the following poem at Land Mammal. I thought it stark and lovely.

Just Delicate Needles

It’s so delicate, the light.
And there’s so little of it. The dark
is huge.
Just delicate needles, the light,
in an endless night.
And it has such a long way to go
through such desolate space.
So let’s be gentle with it.
Cherish it.
So it will come again in the morning.
We hope.

–by Rolf Jacobsen, translated by Robert Hedin

Following along the line of looking for light and befriending the dark, Fran offered a post with questions to help you wind down the year. These are good for reflection and journaling. Perhaps they will even inspire some visual art!

Lastly, on a lighter and sillier note, is a holiday recipe I got in an email. It’s in the rest of the post; click the link.

Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 cup brown sugar
lemon juice
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups dried fruit
1 bottle Absolut vodka

Directions:

  • Sample the Absolut to check quality.
  • Take a large bowl.
  • Check the Absolut again, to be sure it is of the highest quality.
  • Pour 1 level cup and drink.
  • Turn on the electric mixer.
  • Beat 1 cup butter in a large fluffy bowl.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of sugar, beat again.
  • At this point it’s best to make sure the Absolut is still OK, try another cup, just in case.
  • Turn off the mixerer thingy, break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in 1 cup of dried fruit.
  • Pick the frigging fruit off floor.
  • Mix on the turner.
  • If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver.
  • Sample the Absolut to check for tonsisticity.
  • Next, sift 2 cups of salt or something. Who giveshz a sheet.
  • Check the Absolut.
  • Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
  • Add 1 table.
  • Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.
  • Greash the oven.
  • Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.
  • Don’t forget to beat off the turner.
  • Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Absolut and make sure to put the stove in the dishwasher.

Thanks for the plug, Kathryn. Enjoy your company–and I’m smiling at your recipe. I’ve heard it before, but it’s smile worthy. Your “free” hours are winding down with the new job looming after the first of the year. Have a great Christmas week–and I bet you will post, at least a little something. You owe your fans–me–something each day.

Happy Holidays, Kathryn! I’ve been a bit out of the loop lately, but have actually kept up with all your wonderful posts recently. I always enjoy visiting your blog.

Congratulations on your new job. It sounds like it’s a perfect fit, and it’s such a great way to kick off a new year, isn’t it? I wish you all the best with it.

I loved your posts about books read in various years. I used to keep a list like that, too, though I haven’t the past two years or so (… probably because I’ve hardly read any books; there’s been no time!). I also LOVE the library site. How cool is that? I used to keep a list of my books, too, but then got rid of a lot (to make room for new ones, naturally), and didn’t keep the list up to date. I love the online version and all the cool little bits of data (and connections) available on the site. I must spend more time there soon.

The tribute to your father-in-law was so touching. I’m sure he was most grateful for having you in his life, for your kindness, and for the special moments you shared at the end.

Whew … sorry to do such a round-up in one comment, but I wanted to get caught up. It’s amazing how much happens in the blog world in just a few days 🙂
