Percolating

I’ve had a piece of artboard that I painted a year ago. Then I moved and avoided doing anything more with it. It’s been sitting in my workspace as a reminder to return to it. The truth is, I’m not that keen on how the colors came out.

This evening I went out and proceeded to work on it. I had no theme, no ideas. I just began with embossing glitter and glitter glue. I came across a quote, a Zen koan, and liked it. So that went on there, as did a few punch-cut leaves.

The problem is, I still don’t like it. The colors are similar, subtle, and I don’t think it’s very arresting to the eye. However, I’m determined to work on it until it is done, and the least I’ll have made something. Regardless of the end result, it will have served to percolate my creativity.

Hi Kathryn! Perhaps the purpose of that piece, and your efforts, is to keep you percolating! There might not necessarily be an endpoint, or a moment when you say “Fini!” As I tell my students, some questions are best kept as questions, they don’t help us when we seek answers. They do keep us creative and engaged when we just play with them. : )

Haven’t told you in a while how much I appreciate your weblog, but I do very much, and it is a pleasure to always visit.

    Best Regards,

    Nacho
