I Choked On My Coffee

I love me some Dave Barry.

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it “Christmas” and went to church; the Jews called it “Hanukkah” and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say “Merry Christmas!” or “Happy Hanukkah!” or (to the atheists) “Look out for the wall!”

    That Dave, he’s so funny!

I think of the holiday mostly as the “bottom” of the year. Since I was a kid, there has been a picture in my head of the year, looking much like a clock face, with midsummer at the top and midwinter at the bottom. For some reason unknown to me, the year runs counterclockwise in this image, so the vernal equinox comes at three, and the autumnal equinox at nine. I suppose this counter-clockwise rotation is due to the coriolis force, and, like hurricanes and bathtub drains in the northern hemisphere, rotates as it must.

    Is this nuts?

My god, man, that’s an interesting way to visualize the year! I like it. And yes, you might be a little nuts. I like nuts. 🙂
