Lacy green hemlock<\/p>\n<p>waved on the dunes, red stems alluding<br \/>\nto a lethal power. This day it was my<br \/>\nfoe to banish. Gloved fingers burrowed,<\/p>\n<p>sought unseeing, with gentle tugs I<br \/>\neased the pale taproots out. Hours<br \/>\npassed. Piles of conquered plants<\/p>\n<p>multiplied. One lone ladybug hiked<br \/>\nacross a tangle of stems, a cheerful<br \/>\nred button contrasting the gunmetal<\/p>\n<p>sky. A pause. Resting, I observed<br \/>\nher journey, noting that she traipsed,<br \/>\ntumbled on her back, legs waving,<\/p>\n<p>for every completed step forward.<br \/>\nChill wind scoured my mind. I<br \/>\nlooked up. A red kite strained<\/p>\n<p>against a taut and quivering tether.<br \/>\nThe soul, connected by one thin<br \/>\nline to the body. A gust of wind<\/p>\n<p>strong enough can snap it. Where it<br \/>\nlands I cannot guess. Where do<br \/>\nsnowy plover feathers end their<\/p>\n<p>journey after dancing across the<br \/>\nocean?
