It&#8217;s time to put it somewhere more or less permanent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>The Graves of Cats<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The graves of cats are not like<br \/>\nthose of dogs or parakeets.<br \/>\nThey have been slipped out of<\/p>\n<p>a day or maybe two<br \/>\nafter you packed the dark dirt<br \/>\nwith the long-handled shovel.<\/p>\n<p>Now as you play with the child<br \/>\nor drink a beer beside the stream<br \/>\nwhile the swallows skim the wheat,<\/p>\n<p>the cats as though from under the table<br \/>\nstretch and slide past roots<br \/>\nand fallen leaves, and not a blade<\/p>\n<p>of grass disturbed, not a worm,<br \/>\nexcept at the corner of your eye<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s a small shift of direction<\/p>\n<p>in the alfalfa, and for a moment<br \/>\nthe evening preens and stares<br \/>\nin a way you almost call by name.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Harry Humes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had this poem shuffling around my file cabinet for many years.
