Knitting and I are united. What is this thing, <em>knitting<\/em>? My hands. Yes, <em>my<\/em> hands. By manipulating yarn in loops around bamboo sticks and guiding progress with my fingers, stitch after stitch and row upon row accumulate. Something substantial emerges. I&#8217;m fascinated. I&#8217;m also getting tired and making mistakes. The bright side to that is that I&#8217;m beginning to understand the stitches and see how to correct mistakes. Fine, but I need a break. Yet the books in queue &#8212; at least, the ones that aren&#8217;t novels &#8212; don&#8217;t draw me. So it&#8217;s time to put <cite>Beyond the Writers&#8217; Workshop: New Ways to Write Creative Nonfiction<\/cite>, <cite>The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present<\/cite>, and <cite>Soul Collage: An Intuitive Collage Process for Individuals and Groups<\/cite> back in the bookcase for another day. Time to sink into some fiction and give the brain a rest from creating new neural pathways. <\/p>\n<p>Fortunately I acquired several books recently based on reader recommendations. I haven&#8217;t given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0060935332\/qid=1129005800\/sr=8-2\/ref=pd_bbs_2\/102-1142358-9403301?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\">The Master Butcher&#8217;s Singing Club<\/a> a fair shake, so I&#8217;ll try again. Along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0316085251\/qid=1129005693\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14\/102-1142358-9403301?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\">The Boys of My Youth<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/014026759X\/qid=1129006192\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1\/102-1142358-9403301?v=glance&#038;s=books\">Miriam&#8217;s Kitchen<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/037570342X\/qid=1129005766\/sr=8-2\/ref=pd_bbs_2\/102-1142358-9403301?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\">Family Matters<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s pretty clear to me that the books listed in my sidebar cannot compete with the siren song of my newfound love.
