Please, Tell Me

To my readers who have baby-proofed their home, and in particular have installed cabinet latches — the type that you press down on as you open the door so it doesn’t catch:

How long until I stop forgetting they’re there and attempting to open the door only to have the latch catch and practically rip my nail off?

I feel rather stupid attempting to open my cabinet doors now.

In my experience, you’ll catch on about five minutes before you can take them off!

Hee hee. We old ones do eventually adapt, so much so that we have some cabinets with those kind of devices still affixed. (Dismantling them is as much trouble as anything else.)

Yes, you’ll remember at about the same time as she figures them out.

I do it too. Our little guy is starting to figure them out. I still forget they are there, and we have had them up for a year and a half. 🙂

I hate those & never used them. We have latches that tie the doors together for cabinets that need to be locked. Otherwise, we leave cabinets open. Kids were always much more interested in what they could get into than what they couldn’t.

    Darling dearest,

At work recently we were all given keys to the cabinets in our cubicles that had always previously been open and made to lock them every time we leave our desks even for five seconds because some yahoo decided to steal something of some value out of one of the cubicles. Because it’s easier just to leave all the drawers locked until such time that something is needed, all day long, people can be heard cussing and muttering and bemoaning broken nails and stubbed fingers and whatnot after reaching to yank open a locked drawer.

Quelle drag, my friend. Quelle drag.

    I feel your pain.

At least you get to remove your baby-proofing someday (in a time and place far far away…) (smile)

Those latched are a pain! My 7 year old daughter helped me take all the latches off this past summer and believe it or not I still feel for the latch that used to be on the cabinet doors under the sink! LOL

You’ll get used to those latches sooner or later and before you know it your little one will be helping you to remove them!
