An Opportunity to Grow Up

You sit back most of your life, and you assume that there are grown-ups somewhere running the show. If you really get out there, if you look behind the curtain, you see it is just a bunch of tired people like yourself, needing help, trying their best and not doing half as well as they would like. That is the moment when you have an opportunity to grow up and to take your part.

What a great quote! So often I only see other people’s successes and don’t recognize their fatigue, insecurity and need. Thanks for the reminder

You have had some great ideas on things to do in the past…filling out volunteering forms, the listening ministry, literacy coach, working in non-profit arena. And, you seemed like a person who would actually put these into action. I was very inspired. What has happened to all of this??? Please update us!!!!!!!!!!!

I still am meeting with my learner; for confidentiality reasons, I can’t really write about my work with her. I spend my time preparing lessons and so forth. I’ve entered a period of my life where I am focusing on some internal personal growth, so I am doing a bit less work on the world. The listening ministry is still an interest; the trick there is that the church must also be ready to support its development.

I’m still volunteering at Hands On Bay Area projects. There has been a sabbatical, of sorts, from working. Since my job ended in November, the holidays came, then our search for a new home and moving, and I had some health issues. I’ve also been a companion to a friend who is undergoing a harsh treatment for breast cancer and other health problems.

There are seasons in a person’s life; sometimes engagement is external in the community and sometimes it’s internal and within the self.
